Too Little, Too Late?

Apparently American bishops – the Catholic kind, I mean – have finally awakened from their stupor concerning “Catholic” politicians and the abortion issue. Maybe it was the spectacle of Joe Biden – who never met a fetus he wasn't willing to kill – running for, and winning, the vice presidency that got their attention. Of course, Obama, like any other “black leader”, could always be counted on to sell his own people down the abortion river for the sake of political gain and acceptance by the Regime, so he wasn't the problem. But now all of these bishops, who have been happily serving communion to pro-abortion politicians for decades, have decided it's time to take a stand. A related issue – and the one that may, in fact, have gotten their attention – is that of Catholic hospitals, and what happens when the government starts requiring them to perform abortions – something even the Clinton administration stopped short of. In that eventuality, there will be an opportunity for the Church in America to take a real stand, and hopefully the correct one, by simply closing down, and letting the political chips fall where they may. "You want government-run health care? Knock yourselves out." But up until now most of the bishops have been looking the other way when it comes to the politicians in their flocks. The fact that they are waking up to the realities is good. The fact that it took them more than 30 years is kind of depressing. But I'm sure they've been encouraged by Pope Benedict, and perhaps even, in a sort of unconscious way, by the revival of the Latin Mass. Could hearing Latin once in a while make a bishop more militantly pro-life? Well, the Jews consider Hebrew to be a “magic language”, why not Latin? Hey, whatever it takes. I just hope this is not all just mumbling and fretting, and that the next time a Biden or a Kennedy strides into Mass they'll driven back with a flaming sword.
