P-G in the GOP

It's either the biggest "vetting" gaffe since Tom "Electroshock Therapy Boy" Eagleton, or a perversely brilliant political move. You could have held your breath between the time John McCain selected Sarah Palin as his running mate and the time of the announcement that her teen-aged daughter is pregnant. The potential fallout from this development is almost too great to comprehend. For one thing, it will defuse the perennial Democrat/liberal accusation that Republicans/conservatives are a bunch of sexless, Puritanical tight-asses. For another, it's a sure way to corner the "unwed mother vote" which is usually the sole property of the Democrats. And for all I know, Toni Morrison will come out, any day now, with the pronouncement that Palin is our "first black vice-presidential candidate". But hold on a sec -- isn't it against the law for an 18-year-old male to impregnate a 17-year-old female? So when are we going to see him cuffed and frog-walked off to jail for child molestation and statutory rape? Well? Hey, is it a crime or isn't it? There are lots of guys in jail for doing the exact same thing. But I don't really expect this awkward question to come up very often during the campaign. Once you're that high on the totem pole some things cease to be regarded as crimes.

"Never Mind":
Regarding my professed indignation as to the basis for Palin's daughter's pregnancy -- I am now informed that the age of consent in Alaska is 16. Guess that's why they call it "America's Last Frontier"...
